Is Dyslexia Underrecognized in Chinese Schools?

We typically think of dyslexia in relation to alphabetic languages, such as English and Bahasa Melayu. However, dyslexia also exists among speakers of symbol-based languages like Chinese and Japanese - although the learning difficulties faced by children learning these languages may be less well-understood. Consultant developmental paediatrician Dr Rajini Sarvananthan and clinical psychologist Simpson Khoo join us to discuss what dyslexia looks like among Chinese-language learners, and why the problem may remain invisible in Malaysia’s Chinese vernacular schools.
