Foreign spouses in Malaysia often have to endure many years of entering and exiting the country every three months or one year before finally getting a permanent residency visa. They are not allowed to open a bank account in their name, and must pay double charges at government hospitals to deliver their Malaysian babies. What happens to the foreign spouse if their Malaysian spouse passes on, or they get divorced?
The Foreign Spouse Support Group serves to raise awareness for foreign spouses of Malaysian citizens and advocate on their behalf. Chwi Lynn Lee meets the women behind the group, Bina Ramanand and Asha Lim.
