The U.S. State Department recently released its 2016 Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. Widely referred to as a global benchmark for a country’s performance on human rights, Malaysia maintained its Tier-2 ranking for the second year in a row. James Nayagam, a former commissioner of Malaysia’s Human Rights Commission, or Suhakam, and current chairman of Suriana Welfare Society, explains why he finds this ranking problematic.
