Making Traffic Offenders Pay

From now until the end of February, the Petaling Jaya City Council, or MBPJ, is launching a compound payment campaign with discounts of up to 80 percent. More than 4.1 million outstanding traffic summons remain unpaid, but details of traffic offenders who’ve not settled their traffic compounds by March 1st will be given to the Road Transport Department (JPJ) to prevent their road tax getting renewed. We ask Bukit Gasing State Assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran why databases of the police, road transport department and town councils aren’t cross-referenced, as well as whether a campaign offering discount like this helps or worsens traffic violations in the long-run.
