The 24-hour mamak stall is a Malaysian institution. And so it comes as a shock to many Malaysians when Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim, said that the government is considering a proposal to clamp down on these eateries and restrict operating hours until midnight at the latest. Bukit Gasing state assemblyman Rajiv Rishyakaran helps us understand the rationale behind such a ban, whether or not it can be implemented, as well as the legalities of food trucks operating in residential and commercial neighbourhoods.
