Members of the Red2Green march arrived in Kuala Lumpur, having walked some 300 kilometers from Kuantan, in a bid to create awareness on the effects of bauxite mining there. Seventeen days after leaving Berserah in Pahang, the group will present a memorandum at Parliament today to Natural Resources and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, calling for an extension of a three month moratorium on bauxite mining in the state, which ends on April 15th. We explore the framework for sustainable bauxite mining that the group is proposing in the memorandum, and what progress has been made in terms of curbing threats to public health and environmental pollution, in the aftermath of unregulated mining of the aluminium ore.
