Last Friday, the Umno supreme council suspended Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as Deputy President. It was also announced that vice president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would fill the role of deputy president in the interim. Muhyiddin’s suspension will remain until the next Umno election, but does not affect his other posts including as Division Head of Pagoh, Johor. UMNO Secretary General Tengku Adnan Mansor in announcing the move said that “The Supreme council notes that Umno promotes freedom of speech, but … it must be done through proper channels”. Is this a “war of the elites” as Sinar Harian frames it and will the suspension of Muhyiddin spur him mobilise much more forcefully?
