Who’s Afraid of the TPP Agreement

The 18th round of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement began this week in Kota Kinabalu. Malaysia, along with 11 other countries, is part of the trade negotiations. The TTPA has drawn criticism from many quarters including the former PM Dr Mahathir. Yesterday, a coalition of NGOs, together with Parti Socialis Malaysia, protested at Parliament. Tomorrow, the Malay Economic Action Council has plans to protest at Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Meanwhile, MITI secretary-general, Rebecca Fatima Sta Maria, is reported to have said that an agreement has not been reached in many areas and that her Ministry we will not compromise Malaysia’s sovereignty.
