Yesterday, the Dewan Rakyat voted against a motion to extend the enforcement period of section 4(5) of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, or SOSMA. The provision allows for detention without trial for up to 28 days and must be renewed by both houses of parliament every five years to remain valid. The motion was defeated by 86 to 84, with 50 MPs absent from proceedings. We hear from YB Ramkarpal Singh, Member of Parliament for Bukit Gelugor on the events in Parliament and why the SOSMA provision should not be renewed. Image credit: Shutterstock.com
