Zine culture has always been popular in the USA. Usually pieced together with glue and scissors, then mass-photocopied and stapled, zines are seen as an integral part of independent publishing. Founded by Liyana Dizzy and Nine, and joined by Syar Alia, Biawak Gemok hopes to give the medium some much needed life in KL. Describing themselves as a ‘radical indie zine distro’, their zines cover topics rarely discussed in the mainstream narrative, all with the intention of giving a voice to the voiceless. Nine drops by to share the stories behind the sub-culture.
