On the 31st of August 1957, Tunku Abdul Rahman declared our nation’s independence in front of the backdrop of Dataran Merdeka, the Sultan Abdul Samad Building. Designated as a National Heritage site in 2007, the building holds a special place in Malaysian history. Originally housing New Government Offices, and then the higher courts for a period of time afterwards, the iconic building has served many roles, and has been around longer than our young nation has. For this special Merdeka episode of I Love KL, we delve deep into the significance of the building and its history.
